Youve probably seen them all the time but have never thought about them much.
Jiffy bags are everywhere. When I ordered some DVDs the other day, they came in a jiffy bag. Youd be surprised how many you have in your own home if you took the time to look. I know, now youre wondering what all this business is about.
What are jiffy bags? Well, these are envelopes specially made for the delivery of anything that is breakable. They are padded on the inside. The outer surface of the envelope is made of Kraft paper. The inside is padded with bubble wrap. The bubble wrap interior acts as a cushion for impact to the contents of the envelope. Therefore whatever is inside will not break under normal mailing circumstances.
These bags have existed for several decades. However, their popularity arose when floppy disks were introduced. There was a need to send floppy disks via regular post and ensure that they were not damaged. These envelopes ensured this and were preferred to boxes as they were light weight and did not occupy so much space. The envelopes could be easily slipped into mail slots in doors or into mail boxes unlike large boxes which had to be signed for or left at the doorstep.
